letters for local press urging NHS to stop plan to allow building on King George

I am encouraging local Councillors and activists to sign a letter to go to Recorder and Wanstead and Woodford Guardian for publication this week to ask the NHS to withdraw their plan to allow housing on "surplus" land on the King George site.

The letters are as follows

For the Recorder:

Dear Sir or Madam

The 2010 NHS plan for closing King George A&E has a number of stages until the final closure. Some of these stages have already taken place at King George, such as closing some beds designed for emergency admissions and replacing them with rehabilitation beds.

Another part of the 2010 plan at page 113 refers to

"The delivery of the savings forecast will require a rationalisation of the King George Hospital site to make sure that the space vacated by the acute unit is either used productively for an alternative used... estate rationalisation plan would need to be developed bringing together... parts of the King George Hospital site and buildings that can be decommissioned cleared and sold."

NHS Board managers meet in public on Wednesday 7th March at King George Hospital, this will be their last chance to withdraw plans to allow building a housing estate on King George. If they continue with their plans Redbridge Council will almost certainly confirm them at a key meeting of 15th March.

We say the Board must think again on 7th March and pull the plan to allow housing and instead extend King George Hospital to cope with the growing North East London population.

For the Wanstead & Woodford Guardian

Dear Sir or Welcome

It is welcome that Whipps is being redeveloped, however, no extra beds for emergency admissions have been promised for the new building.

Queens hospital is struggling to cope now, with the December 2017 4 hour A&E waits at 72.5%. Meanwhile, local NHS managers are planning to green light plans to build a housing estate on the King George Hospital site at their meeting of 7th March at King George Hospital.

We say North East London needs more beds to cope with emergency admissions and it would be wrong to remove the option of providing more acute beds at King George. An extension of King George would be bound to relieve pressures on both Whipps and Queens.
